One city, very different fire risks
Liverpool city centre packs offices, hotels, student accommodation and nightlife into a compact grid. Many older buildings have been converted to new uses, and their escape routes were often designed for a different number of people.

How fire safety is enforced in Liverpool
Liverpool is covered by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. In the year to March 2025 it carried out 2,076 fire safety audits, and 22.6% found premises unsatisfactory: tenth lowest of the 44 services in England.
Inspectors also check that staff know what to do in a fire, and up-to-date training records are the simplest way to show it.

Is online fire safety training adequate?
Online training can satisfy the basic awareness requirement for low-risk premises. For most premises, the fire authority expects to see evidence of on-site training that is specific to the building — referencing the actual escape routes, assembly point, and evacuation procedure. How often should fire safety training be repeated?
Annual refresher training is appropriate for most premises. New starters should receive induction training before they take up their role. When the building's evacuation procedure changes, all staff should be retrained on the new procedure.
