Bolton's buildings still reflect its cotton-spinning past. Former mills in and around the town centre, Farnworth, Astley Bridge and Horwich have been converted into offices, workshops, self-storage and apartments. Conversions like these often combine large open floors and original timber construction with later partitions and openings that undermine compartmentation, so the assessment has to look at how the building has actually been altered, not just how it is used today.
